There are some 71 species of lemurs, primates only found on the island of Madagascar. This gallery features one of my favorites, the bamboo lemurs. Most of the photographs were taken at the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, NC, and feature captive Hapalemur griseus griseus (eastern grey bamboo lemur), one of the three species of bamboo lemurs. There also are a few photos taken in eastern Madagascar of two other species of bamboo lemur, Hapalemur simus (the greater bamboo lemur), and Hapalemur aureus (the golden bamboo lemur), two of the most endangered primates on earth.
